Online Roulette – Rules, How to Win, Where to Play

What is Roulette?

Roulette is an extremely popular game of chance, played at online casinos and land-based casinos throughout the world. This game made its debut in the late 1700s in Paris, and nowadays, a casino simply cannot please players without at least 10 Roulette tables open.

There are 3 main variations of the game – American, European, and French. Each has subtle differences that every Roulette player needs to know about, but the basic premise is this:

You need to predict which number a ball will land on when the Roulette wheel is spinning. You do this by placing bets on a Roulette board that contains 37 (or 38) numbers and several other betting areas. If your bet is successful, then you will get paid. If the ball lands on a Zero, then the house will take your money.

For Roulette, there is basically no skill involved since the game is based purely on chance. That is why even complete beginners have a chance of winning money!

Understanding The Roulette Wheel and Board

The Roulette Wheel will have either 37 or 38 numbers, depending on whether there is a double zero or single zero. The zero(s) are usually green or white. Numbers 1 – 36 on the wheel are listed randomly and alternate between black and red colors. During gameplay, the wheel will spin in one direction while the ball spins in the opposite direction. Only the casino dealer can touch the Roulette Wheel.

And right next to the Roulette Wheel is the Roulette Board where players can use casino chips to place their preferred bets.

How To Play Roulette In 5 Easy Steps

Getting started is easy. Here are the basic 5 steps of playing a round of Roulette:

  • Choose the type of Roulette game you want to play.
  • Place your bet(s) on the board.
  • The Roulette wheel will continue spinning.
  • The ball will come to a stop on one of the numbers.
  • When your guess is correct, your winnings will be paid immediately – Congratulations!

Popular Roulette Variants

There are many types of Roulette, however, the 3 main versions are American, European, and French. They are all quite similar, but the Single Zero, Double Zero, La Partage, and En Prison rules are the only aspects that cause the gameplay to differ. If you know how to play one version of Roulette, you will be able to make the easy transition to playing other major versions.

American Roulette

American Roulette is distinguished from the other versions of the game by the double-zero (2 zeroes) on the wheel. Unfortunately, this double-zero will reduce the odds of you winning. The house edge of this game is 5.26%, which far higher than that of the other 2 versions of Roulette below. If you are planning to win big long term, then please avoid American Roulette.

European Roulette

European Roulette only has a single zero, therefore making the game more favorable to players. Surprisingly, removing the double zero from the wheel takes the house edge down to a much lower 2.7%.

French Roulette

And finally, there is French Roulette. This is the best form of roulette in terms of the player’s winning chances, because there is a small house edge of only 1.35% (compared to 2.7% and 5.26%!). This low house edge exists because there is no double zero, and because French Roulette will feature the following 2 rules:

La Partage – In French, this means “the divide”. This rule says that players betting on Even will receive half their money back if the ball lands on zero. This is an advantage for the player, because in American Roulette, you do not receive anything back if the ball lands on a zero.

En Prison – In French, this means “in prison”. The En Prison rule is used when the player’s Even bet results in a zero. This bet is “imprisoned” and the player can only get back their money if the next spin results in a win for the player. This is also an advantageous rule for the player, but not as much as the La Partage rule.

The Best Bets for Beginner Roulette Players

Are you looking to become a millionaire by making 1 lucky bet just like in the Hollywood movies? A Straight Up bet sounds like the best choice, right? After all, a payout of 35 to 1 seems super attractive! However, this is not the case.

It might not seem like the adrenaline-pumping exciting strategy you were wishing for, but for both beginners and professionals, betting on Red/Black, Even/Odd, and High/Low is actually the safest. Despite having the lowest payouts for players, the casino also has the lowest house edge.

The Most Important Tip: This needs to be said again. Players looking for the highest probability of winning should almost always play French Roulette.
